Sarah of the Daily English Show Devotes Show # 1269 to Zachariah

Wednesday morning, September 8:

Sarah Lilburn, one of our Active Partners, just published a show featuring Zach.

Sarah has added complete closed captions, or subtitles for the Deaf, using the new tools in YouTube. Click on Play, and then click on the red arrow at the bottom, and then choose "CC"!

Her blog includes the text of the "conversations with Sarah" section of this show, and a lot of other interesting information about Zach's area called Karagita, in or near Naivasha, Kenya.

Please watch this video. Post it on your own page!
The first 3 days of this campaign were good. Now a week later, and no more contributions are coming in. Please join us in this effort!

Here is the normal version of the 4 Zach Videos. First, my talking head provides context for this effort during the first 3 minutes, before you meet Zachariah, and Alice who interviews and interprets for us.

You can send a message to Zachariah via his Facebook page. Please keep in mind that Zach can not spend much time on the internet yet. That is why we are wondering if our first contribution should be for a modest laptop and an Internet Service Provider. At the present time, he's spending the little money he has on an internet café type of service in order to communicate with us.

Also, coming tomorrow Monday September 6, a video of Zach on the "Monday Guest" sequence from Sarah Lilburn of The Daily English Show.

You will see how Sandie Linn, Associate Professor at the Centre City Continuing Education campus of the San Diego Community College District, and an Active Partner in this effort, uses ASL with ESL in mixed classes for both Deaf and hearing students (Please see video # 1 for more context).

Transparency

This is a spontaneous grassroots fundraising campaign. I am doing this fundraiser for tuition and expenses of Zachariah Ngechu Gitonga exclusively, completely free of any financial charge. Unlike a traditional, organized charity, there are no employees, and my time and the time of all helpers, contributors or Active Partners is completely voluntary and free of any charge.

Nevertheless, since all payments come through PayPal, which charges a substantial fee for every single contribution, probably due to PayPal's monopoly in this regard, all contributors should know that a $10 donation, for example, actually represents $9,31 USD in money credited to his account, in my name.

This is my second PayPal account. I opened it for Zach only for obvious reasons.

At the present moment Sunday 9/5/10 3:25 GMT for example, the balance is $206.217 USD instead of the $259 actually donated.

Finally, Zachariah first contacted me last April 28th, and the first important thing I did was to ask that the PayPal account for Zach's fundraiser be in the name of the Institute, not in my name. I would like to avoid the responsibility of having to handle such a large amount of money in the end, as well as the question of taxes.

The Institute explained that this was impossible, simply due to American tax laws. I then tried to find a suitable charity receiving agent. In fact I would like to hand over all money to such an organization immediately and just keep on working on the social aspect of the task, i.e., the actual grunt work of getting people involved, and attempt to make it viral, and actually make it work.

What such organization can be suggested? Trusted to be responsive to funds for 1 individual in a world which is drowning in basic needs?
